With the stable edition of Vivid Vervet (Ubuntu 15.04) coming up for release at the end of April this is a good time to take a look at some of the features that are going to be implemented in the new release.
Ubuntu 15.04 is not set to be an exciting release with not many visual changes being implemented, with the team transitioning to a new Unity version that is still not ready for general use, it’s easy to understand why Ubuntu 15.04 is not all that different from Ubuntu 14.10. However, it is an important upgrade because some very important changes have been made, including the adoption of systemd.
The Linux kernel has been upgraded
As it was to be expected, one of the core components of Ubuntu, the Linux kernel, was upgraded to version 3.19.6
Systemd replaces Upstart:
Having Ubuntu being based on Debian, it was only a matter of time until Systemd became default.
Unity and Compiz receive minor upgrades
While developers continue work on Unity 8, Unity 7 has been refined and improved, along with Compiz.
All the major apps have been upgraded
Upgrades to Firefox 37.0 and LibreOffice 4.4 will be implemented to bring these default applications up to date.
Locally Integrated Menus are now default
Locally Integrated Menus are now longer in the system’s top bar but are now integrated directly in the title bar.
