Coinciding with the start of the International Supercomputing Conference ISC’12, a new list of the world’s 500 fastest supercomputers has been released. As has been the case for a while, Linux is dominating the list where operating systems are concerned: 462 of the world’s 500 fastest computers are running on Linux.
The fastest computer on the list is now IBM’s Sequoia which has replaced the Fujitsu-built K Computer, both of which run Linux. Aside from the open source operating system, 25 computers on the top 500 list are running Unix variants, 2 are running Windows and 11 supercomputers are using a combination of operating systems.
