Non-Linux FOSS: Open-Source Windows?

The best way I can think to describe it is to imagine if Wine evolved into an entire operating system that booted on hardware instead of running inside Linux. It’s not ready for prime time (and the developers make that very clear—it’s alpha software), but it’s worth checking out. Since it’s early in the development process, if you get involved now, you can have a say in what compatibilities get priority.

The voting is over in the first round of our annual GNU/Linux distro poll, which sought an answer to the simple question, “What Linux distro do you currently use most?” The result was a complete surprise, at least to us. But this was just round one of a two part polling process, and the round two poll is already up and running.

Unvanquished Free First-Person Shooter Game Gets Its First Release for 2016

The guys over Unvanquished, a free and open-source FPS (first-person shooter) game for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems, have just returned from their winter holidays and released the first Alpha build for 2016. Unvanquished Alpha 47 comes with some interesting additions, among which we can mention Breakpad support for the game engine to provide users with a simpler and friendlier crash reporting system, but available only for Linux, Windows and NaCl.

Nvidia Uses Ubuntu at CES 2016 to Show Nvidia DriveWorks

At CES 2016 Nvidia announced some really interesting new hardware aimed at autonomous cars, along with NVIDIA DriveWorks, and they seem to have used Ubuntu for the demo. The fact that Nvidia shows upcoming technology running on a Linux distribution, in this case, Ubuntu, at CES 2016 shows just how much things have evolved for the open source operating system.

WorkMail GA: Amazon Cloud-Based Email and Calendar Ready for Prime Time

WorkMail, the cloud-based email and calendar platform that constitutes Amazon’s answer to Microsoft Exchange and Google Apps, has entered general availability, with new features to boot. WorkMail does not provide all of the features of Google and Microsoft’s cloud-based apps — there’s no word processor, for example — but it competes in the most important categories.
